Chapter Twenty-Two

Emma

This was so weird. I was zipping my last suitcase closed and Bobbi was sitting on her bed. I couldn’t believe I was moving into a mansion in the Hamptons.

“I’m sorry if I was mean about you leaving.” Bobbi was painting her toenails. “I am going to miss you, you know.”

“I’m going to miss you too, Bobs.” Who else would get my inside jokes about The Big Bang Theory?

“So they’re sending a limo to get you? A hundred-and-fifty miles each way? They must be so rich!”

“Yeah. They are pretty rich. But the kid I am watching, Caleb, is super cute and very down to earth. Not spoiled at all.” Unlike his grandmother.

“Well, if you want to tell them you have a little sister who can help babysit too, I’d be happy to go live in a mansion.”

I laughed and said, “I’ll put in a good word for you.”

Just then, our mother called my name from the kitchen. “Emma! It’s almost two. Are you ready? You don’t want to keep Mr. Cross waiting when he gets here.”

I grabbed my bags and went into the living room. I was as ready as I’d ever be. My mother had been fluttering about ever since I told her I’d taken the position. “Do you think that handsome boss of yours will be coming, too?”

She’d be horrified to know that “that handsome boss” was more than just a boss. No, Emma. He’s just your boss now. The other stuff is in the past.

“I doubt it. He’s very busy. That’s why they need a nanny?”

“Right. Right. Of course.” We stood in the kitchen just looking at each other for a moment.

As if on cue, the doorbell rang. Bobbi came racing out of her room faster than I’d ever seen her move in her life. “I’ll get it!”

Evidently she thought it would be Brent, too. The disappointment in her voice was obvious as she flung the door open and saw it was Mr. Cross. “Oh.” She stepped aside and said, “Emma’s in the kitchen.”

I had to laugh. Brent Irvine had quite the effect on all the ladies.

The man who walked in was the same man who I’d met the day of the interview. I hadn’t noticed before, but he looked a lot like a young Bill Murray. He had kind of a crooked smile and a goofy look about him. “Hi, I’m Pete Cross.” He extended his hand. “Nice to meet you, officially.”

My mom and Bobbi were huddled in the kitchen, peering out. They were acting like I was moving into Buckingham Palace. It was nice and everything, but they were acting ridiculous.

“Are these your bags?” Pete looked at the three small bags by the front door.

“Yep. That’s me.”

He seemed surprised that there weren’t more. “I’ll just put them in the car while you say your goodbyes.” He grabbed the suitcases and went out the door.

“Well. This is it.”

“I’m sorry that Kevin couldn’t be here. He had a...meeting.”

We both knew it wasn’t true. He didn’t approve of the job I’d taken and made no bones about it.
